PUPPY TRAINING

Puppy Socialisation and Pet Dog Training

However adorable you find your puppy, the world will not agree if that little bundle of mischief grows up to become an unruly menace!

Our various puppy classes will help you work on your relationship with your new dog so that you become the centre of their universe and pleasing you becomes the reason for their existence. Everything else is then easy!

All of our classes are run in a friendly and welcoming environment so that puppies and young dogs feel comfortable. The Devon Dogs trainers are all very knowledgeable and experienced with different breeds, temperaments and ages of dog and will work with the owners to help them understand how a young pup’s brain develops.

The classes run in blocks of 10 weeks and once you have completed your block we will be able to advise on the next suitable class for you to progress to, to help you keep developing that relationship and growing more skills and behaviours.

Puppy Agility Foundation (Mondays)

Before we start agility foundation with any new dogs we recommend that you do at least one block of Puppy, Young Dog or Adult Life Skills classes (as above). These classes cover many of the basics that we need you to have before we can start agility training and we find those people that have attended life skills first progress more quickly with agility classes because they have a solid foundation.
Once you have completed your life skills classes we can take puppies in our agility Foundation classes from 4months. These classes run on a Monday evening, at either 5pm or 6pm.

Puppies that join our agility classes will be set exercises that focus on pre-agility foundation work without putting undue stress on their growing joints. There are many exercises that young dogs can work on that will help build their agility foundation work and understanding, before they even set foot on any of the equipment. They will learn how to love the sport as well as learn self-control in an agility environment, which is key to being able to work off-lead  in an agility class eventually, with a lot of movement, noise and excitement happening! Then when they are old enough and experienced enough and are introduced to the equipment, they will be very well prepared.

Puppies / Young Dog Life Skills & Pet Obedience class (Wednesdays)

Our Puppies and Young Dogs Life Skills classes run on a Wednesday evening at Newhall,
from 6 – 9pm.

The classes cover skills and exercises to help your dog develop into a well mannered, nice member of society who you enjoy spending time with.
In our Puppy class (6pm) we teach basis Life skills and enable puppies to learn at a speed that suits their development and so that they can progress into our adult dog classes. We recommend very young puppies (from 10wks) join our puppy classes on a Friday evening as we try to keep all young pups together as they will be most similar in development stage this way. Older pups would probably be more suited to Wednesday evening classes.

We allow pups to enjoy the process of learning using innovative methods and dynamic equipment wherever possible in safe and secure environment.
Our Devon Dogs instructors have experience of working with many different breeds and will have a good understanding of your breed’s original intended purpose so will be able to help you work on motivation specific to your dog and help you build a strong relationship with your canine friend.

Once you have completed your 10 week Puppy block you can progress to the later classes where we will continue to work with you on developing more advanced skills, behaviours and understanding with your dog.
Our Wednesday evening classes have 4 levels for you to progress through – puppies, beginners, intermediate and advanced.

Puppy Socialisation and Life Skills class (Fridays)

These weekly classes are held on a Friday evening at Newhall Equestrian Centre, Broadclyst and welcome puppies as soon as they have had their full vaccinations from their vet. Typical ages of puppies starting in these classes are between 10-15wks and we try to encourage the younger puppies to come to these classes, rather than our other puppy classes, so that they are all at similar stages of development.

The Devon Dogs instructor will help you work on all the life skills you will need for your new puppy – a reliable recall, good manners with food and toys, grooming, not jumping up and many other skills your puppy will need to become a welcome member of society. They will also get an opportunity each week for some free running with the other pups in the class as good socialisation is key to bringing up a well balanced puppy.

Our classes run for 45mins per week and unfortunately a dog’s learning happens 24hours a day. Therefore we will set you homework tasks each week of things we want you to keep working on in your spare time to help you progress in the classes and build solid foundations for your dogs learning.
All of the learning is done with positive reward based training methods, with the main emphasis on having FUN with your puppy, and building a strong relationship with you.

Doggy Play Days

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week we run a Doggy Play Day at Newhall for existing Devon Dogs Customers who bring their dogs to other training classes with us.

You can drop your dog off from 8am and pick them up before 5.30pm and they will enjoy a whole day of running, playing, socialising, having fun and just being allowed to be dogs, all whilst being closely supervised by a member of the Devon Dogs Training Team. We can even work on specific areas of training with them if you require, such as recall, or playing with toys, or building up a good wait/stay, which you might want to work on for your other training classes.

We highly recommend these Play Days for any puppies, young dogs, adult dogs, and even for dogs who are worried or nervous about other dogs. They are a great way of allowing dogs to socialise, learn how to relate to other dogs and be confident around all breeds, ages, sizes and colour. And you pick up an exhausted but happy dog at the end of the day! Contact us for more details.

 Vito

“When I got Vito I started puppy classes at St Davids Vets, it was really useful so after the initial puppy training I enrolled on an 8 week course with Devon Dogs, after that we moved on to the Life Skills and Obedience course. I always look forward to the classes as they're so much fun, Vito can be quite a handful but Mandy and Vivienne have shown me lots of different ways of working with him with an emphasis on practicality. I've also taken him to the doggy play days, which are brilliant for socialising him and also for getting rid of some of his excess energy!

As well as working on obedience, we've had an intro to some basic agility obstacles, such as the tunnel, dog walk, cones/weaves, worked on our sit/stay, recall, even learned some tricks. The groups are small and the trainers are happy to work with handlers on a one to one basis if you have any questions. On our walks he's gone from constantly biting my ankles and jumping up to walking nicely to heel, has the most reliable recall of any dog I know and just loves to please, all this at 7 months old”.
