Things to know

Whether you’re visiting for a 1-2-1 lesson, joining a group class, or staying in our cottages, here’s everything you need to know!

We’re here to help! Got questions?

Here are answers to the most common questions. If you need more details, feel free to email us.

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Check out our What to Bring Checklist for everything you need.

Do I need special clothing?

Wear comfortable clothing suited for outdoor activities—British weather can be unpredictable! Wellies and wet weather gear are a good idea. If you’re training on artificial grass, bring clean indoor shoes.

How do I get to East Bowerland Farm?

Follow directions from our contact page. Upon arrival, park in the designated area and wait in your vehicle until your lesson begins.

Don’t have a car? No problem, just contact us and we can help.

What treats and toys should I bring?

We recommend high-value treats (see The Amazing Recipe Book for ideas) and a variety of toys your dog enjoys.

What collar and lead should I use?

Bring a flat collar and standard lead (no choke chains or extendable leads). Harnesses with double-ended leads are encouraged, and we can help you get started.

How many dogs are in a class?

Class sizes vary, and we love having a mix of skill levels to create a dynamic learning environment.

Does my dog need obedience skills before training?

Not at all! If your dog knows basic commands, that’s great—but if not, we’ll teach you everything you need know. We recommend starting with an initial 1-2-1 lesson before joining regular weekly classes.

What if my dog is reactive or doesn’t like other dogs?

You may not have heard but we kinda love working with these dogs. We specialise in helping Naughty But Nice dogs thrive! Check out our Naughty But Nice training events for the support you need.

What’s the best training to start with?

We recommend starting with an initial 1-2-1 lesson before joining regular weekly classes. This will cover all the essential skills for a happy, well-mannered dog.

What can I expect from my first class?

Classes include a mix of training exercises and homework assignments. We encourage you to bring a notepad or record your session for reference.

At what age can my puppy start training?

As soon as they’ve had their vaccinations! We recommend starting with an initial 1-2-1 lesson before joining regular weekly classes. This will allow your new puppy time to experience the new environment without the pressures of also meeting lots of new dogs right away.

Where are classes held?

All training takes place at East Bowerland Farm, Okehampton, in our large indoor training barn.

How can I stay updated on events?

Follow us on Facebook and check our Events page for the latest workshops, classes, and news.

Why should I book a 1-2-1 lesson?

A private session allows you to focus on specific struggles, get tailored advice, or train multiple dogs. We firmly believe its the best way to get started and on the right track for you and your dogs.

“Brilliant place for training your dog and yourself. Whatever you want be it agility, obedience, tricks or help with behaviour its a friendly, helpful and safe place to be with amazing trainers for you and your dog all in a beautiful setting. What more could you ask for!“
