The wins this week have been amazing! Classes back up and running with everyone being really great about social distancing and bringing all they need to train. We have really missed our students! Now that lock down is gradually lifting, we have received lots of queries from owners worried about their dogs and ‘socializing’. Monthly classes really showed the power of the games with 2 of the dogs in the group working the most confident and focused they have ever been. Prior to lock down both dogs would have to be worked away from any activity, especially unknown dogs. In class, this week you would have never known the struggles the owners have overcome! The big win is this was the first time they both had been working around other dogs since before lock down!
How was this achieved? The power of games based training and working on confidence, novelty, proximity, disengagement and having fun. Not taking the dogs out and about during lock down was the best things for them. The owners were super creative and the dogs all had new experiences when training at home. What types of things did the owners do? Simple and random novelty situations like leaving a carrier bag in the hallway, wearing a high viz jacket in the house while training and pairing the experience with their dog’s dinner! There are so many things we can do at home to help our dogs, we just need to be creative and it really pays off!
Our residential puppies have been doing some vehicle travel, practicing lead walking, recall and going to new places like the moors and into Okehampton. Our residential puppies have been really doing well and we love watching their progress. If you have a new puppy, have a look at our Residential Puppy Webpage!
